Patrick Bauchau: TNT/Yahoo Chat with Richard Marcus and Patrick Bauchau (Page Three)From TNT/Yahoo Audio Chat -- March 30, 2001 (continued from Page 2) Moderator: For both of you: How did you enjoy Toronto? RM: Toronto was chilly. I'm not used to that being here in California, but it was a wonderful town. I had the sense that people in Toronto actually read. PB: (laughing) Strange town. RM: (laughs) Yeah, strange town. But it was a real cosmopolitan city - much like New York, but a smaller version of New York - and I rather enjoyed it. And the people are very, very nice there. And the crew itself was wonderful. PB: Well it was great for some of us, you know like Miss Parker and Michael T. and myself, because we were...we shot the Pilot there and it was great to get back there, to the cradle as it were. And of course, although the Centre is said to be in Delaware, the actual construction is in Toronto - incredible construction on the lake there, the old water works. So it was great for a lot of us to get back there. RM: I have to add that the second show, my poor bald head froze, (Patrick laughs) 'cause we had to do some exterior shots. That's when I wished I was back in sunny, Southern California. PB: Yeah, we suffered. Moderator: And along those lines we've got a lot of people asking for details about the second movie. And without giving anything away, what details can you offer about The Island of the Haunted? RM: Well, it's full of details, so it'd be difficult to talk about it without getting into detail. But needless to say there is a lot of power...there are a lot of power struggles going on in that show. You will learn who actually comes out on top by the end of the show. PB: Yeah, part...a very important part of the mystery of the relationship between Jarod and the Centre is explored in thrilling ways, but I think we may have to do another two or three to really wrap up the...what is beginning to be revealed in this one. RM: Actually I think maybe four or five are needed to figure out really how everything resolves itself. PB: Are you talking double episodes or... RM: Yeah, double episodes, yeah. PB: ...movies of the week. Ah ha. RM: Yeah, movies of the week - four or five more movies of the week. PB: I mean, the situation of the Centre is so involved that it's clearly very difficult for Steve and Craig, as a team of writers, to be able to eliminate, uh...but the episode that's coming up goes a long way. Moderator: For Richard: What do you do to prepare yourself to play the evil Dr. Raines? RM: Well I try not to get too much sleep the night before. And then I...of course makeup does help a lot. Actually, in all acting, makeup...you do a certain amount of transformation during makeup. And when my head is shaved I look at myself in the mirror, and then when I'm around my fellow actors, I see Sydney and I snarl at him, and then... PB: I forgive you. RM: And then he forgives me. But that helps me get into my character, actually. It is a gestalt that occurs when an actor becomes a character. Also sometimes I talk over the specific scenes with the director, and then I take a couple of deep breaths, and all of a sudden I become Raines. Moderator: For both of you: Patrick and Richard, what are the main differences for an actor between shooting a classic episode and a telefilm? PB: Well I would say that the telefilms that we shot in Canada were very elaborate in the sense that they're definitely conceived as two hours, and the writers and the director, Fred Keller, gives himself the space and the time to twist and turn the story in all the directions and reveal its richness. Moderator: Richard, did you want to answer that one? RM: I think Patrick more or less answered it in a way that I would have. The episode, funnily enough, has a certain amount of finality to it, whereas the movie of the week you feel...as an actor you feel like it is more a part of a life situation. I don't know if that's understandable, but if you get my meaning there. PB: Dr. Raines's meanings are always extremely complex (Richard laughs) and worth poring over...more than one time. Moderator: If everyone at the Centre were on Survivor, who would win? RM: Uh huh. Well...I think each one believes that they would win in their own right. Well, Raines thinks he would win of course, and I would imagine everyone else believes that to be the case, that they would think that Raines would win. PB: Raines would win, but... RM: Raines rules. PB: Raines would win...Raines would win and the others would survive. (laughter) Surviving Raines is an everyday task...at the Centre that is. In life the honorable Dr. Marcus is the most charming of friends. Moderator: For both of you: What is your favorite Pretender episode? RM: Well I will have to say that Cold Dick was mine. Even though I'm to this day embarrassed, I thought it was the most fun. PB: Yes, but, Richard, undeniably I think that the one that is coming up is far more complex and twisted and interesting... RM: Oh yes, no doubt about it. PB: ...and that one is due any day now I think. I don't know exactly when TNT is going to release it, but from everything that we've seen it's much the better. RM: Yeah I will have to go along with that. Moderator: Patrick, did you have a favorite episode? PB: Well, the one coming up, you know, I really think that's great - the last one we shot in Canada and which TNT's due to release...I'm not sure actually because the dates have varied. RM: Sometime this year. PB: Yeah, Sometime this year. Moderator: For Richard: Can you give us any information on what Raines meant when he called Jarod and Parker, "my children." RM: Well, I think he was being vague on purpose, and he meant it in that scene somewhat figuratively. PB: But I think he also meant Sydney, no? RM: Yes. PB: Sydney is also one of Dr. Raines's children. RM: Yes. PB: After all those years... RM: That's right. PB: ...I qualify. RM: That's right you do. (chuckles) Sydney does qualify.
