Patrick Bauchau: TNT/Yahoo Chat with Richard Marcus and Patrick Bauchau

From TNT/Yahoo Audio Chat -- March 30, 2001

The following is the transcript of the TNT/Yahoo audio chat with Richard Marcus and Patrick Bauchau, held March 30, 2001. We have attempted to transcribe as faithfully as possible from the actual audio feed. The streaming audio file from Yahoo contains the entire chat, though at times it's very difficult to hear Patrick and Richard (we recommend reading along while you listen). Windows Media Player is required to hear the file. Emily is the TNT moderator, Kelly the TNT typist and Deb is Patrick's webmaster. Any comments in brackets [ ] are by Deb.

Moderator: Welcome to TNT's Pretender chat with Richard Marcus and our surprise guest, Patrick Bauchau. Now's your chance for the inside scoop on the Centre and two of its most enigmatic employees, so get your questions in. [Patrick's last name is pronounced "beau-show."]

Moderator: The first question is for you, Richard. Will you get your thumb back?

RM: Ahh, well...I think that is a situation where we have to leave that up to surprise, but it is a movable thumb, and it does seem to wander in the Centre. So that's a hint. I'm not saying I'm the one that will get it back though.

PB: I'm definitely not involved.

RM: (laughing) Well, it's possible that he might be involved, but we're not going to give it away.

Moderator: This is for both of you: What is it like working with Andrea Parker?

RM: It's quite enjoyable. She's very smart, of course very attractive, and I think she's an amazing comedienne. She's wonderful, and it was quite wonderful working with her all those years. And I miss her dearly. Patrick...?

PB: She has been, definitely, the joy of working on this show, particularly as we're all Centre related, so we've got much more opportunity to interact with her than with Jarod. Andrea has been one of the solid joys of working in the Centre. We have the opportunity of interacting with her almost every time that we go on the stage. And she's been a total surprise in every show for four years - in fact five years now. We saw her budding into a comedienne at first, and then an action star, and even a tragedienne.

RM: We must add that of course as the character, Miss Parker, she can be awfully mean, especially to poor, poor Mr. Raines, who's quite an innocent when you think about it.

PB: Not in my book. (Richard laughs). This is Sydney. Although, there's a rumor at the moment that I may soon discover that Mr. Raines...is my father? Oh, no. I'm his father?

Moderator: No spoilers now.

RM: (laughs) Needless to say, the Centre is slightly incestuous. But that's of course in a metaphorical sense.

Moderator: We've had lots of questions about Cold Dick because of course that was a pretty exceptional episode. This question asks: Was Cold Dick a funny episode to make?

RM: I would imagine it was wonderful to make. (laughs) Yes, it was quite enjoyable.

PB: Now Cold Dick is the last episode that we've been filming?

Moderator: That's where Richard makes his special appearance as Mr. Wiggles.

PB: Oh my God! Oh, that was a scream, yes. (laughs)

RM: See I'm being very modest when I said it was...I can't really talk too much about it.

Moderator: Love to hear any anecdotes you've got to offer.

RM: Well, I have to say that I had to walk around in my leopard bikini for a long while to get used to it before we filmed because I have to say I was slightly embarrassed. So I pranced around for about...mmm...five hours, walking through the stage so I could adjust to the circumstance.

PB: You'd never worn fur before? (Richard laughs) Mr. Raines! The things we find out about you.

Moderator: Ready for the next one?

RM: I don't know. I have to recover from the last one!

Moderator: The next one is for Patrick. Are you anything like Sydney in real life?

PB: I don't think at all. Of course, as an actor you always integrate, inevitably, the sides of your own experience and psyche. I'm not sure that answers it....

RM: Well I...let me say that I thought that Patrick was...everybody in the crew and the cast came to Patrick for advice. In a way we could say that Sydney and Patrick were very much alike because he was wonderful solace for all of us when we were going through our own personal...what could one say...own personal lives.

PB: Trials? (laughing)

RM: Trials and tribulations. So Patrick always was there for us.

PB: So you see I'm on my way to becoming a therapist. My father is a therapist of course.

Moderator: The next one is for you Richard, from Australia, and this person wants to know if you ever feel sorry for Mr. Raines.

RM: All the time. (Patrick laughs) I feel that Mr. Raines has really been wronged in so many ways by so many of the people in the Centre. He's almost become a sort of a scapegoat. And all the good he's done for the Centre really has not been...he's not earned any merit for it. So in some ways, yes, I do feel sorry for him.

PB: Are you trying to say that every one of us at the Centre actually took a shot at you... (Richard laughs) tried to kill you?

RM: (laughing) Yes!

PB: On one memorable occasion, all three of us? And we missed!

RM: Yes I do feel sorry for Raines, but that's...on another level I feel that Raines got what he deserved.

Moderator: Richard, along the same lines, this question is: Are you afraid of being typecast as a bad guy now?

RM: Oh, no, I'm actually hoping that I do get typecast as a bad guy because that means that there's going to be more work for me. There are only a few lawyer roles and police roles, but there are a lot of bad guy roles, so I rather enjoy it.

Moderator: For Patrick: Can you really speak seven languages?

PB: I have a good ear, so I can slip quickly into a foreign language when the culture is attractive to me. I have in the course of time picked up a certain number of languages.

RM: Let me just add that I remember him speaking Bulgarian (Patrick laughs) on the set one day. That was difficult to understand for everyone.

PB: And that was with...particularly as it was with a Romanian.

RM: That's right.

PB: 'Cause not even he could understand me.
