Patrick Bauchau: Terranova

Terranova is set in rural 1950's Venezuela. The film deals with the relationships between several characters, especially that of Rosetta and Noemi. Rosetta is the matriarch of an Italian immigrant family and Noemi is the aristocratic landower who rents Rosetta's family land to farm. This unlikely pair develop a close friendship that leads to self-realization and growth in the lives of both, and that of the people around them.

Patrick Bauchau plays Roman Stal, a "foreigner" who is the best friend of Rosetta's brother, Antonio (Antonio Banderas). Roman is an intelligent man -- he speaks several languages, paints and is teaching Antonio how to repair radios -- but he is also something of an enigma. He places personal ads in newspapers, hoping to find his wife and son from whom he has been separated for some time. However, Roman holds a secret, one that he later reveals to Antonio. That revelation leads to self-discovery for both Antonio and Roman, paralleling the development in the lives of Rosetta and Noemi.
