Patrick Bauchau: The State of Things

In The State of Things, Patrick Bauchau plays Friedrich "Fritz" Munro, the director of a post-apocalyptic movie called "Survivors" being shot in Lisbon. Shooting rapidly comes to a grinding halt when Friedrich is told by his head cameraman that they have no more film. The producer, Gordon, is missing; there's no money to buy additional stock. The cast and crew are left sitting around hoping Gordon will come through so they can finish the picture.

Meanwhile, Friedrich feels an increasing sense of doom and is frustrated as he continually faces obstacles in his search for Gordon. Eventually he decides to leave for a weekend in Los Angeles to try to track the producer down. As it turns out, Fritz is not the only one looking for Gordon.

The State of Things is director Wim Wenders' semi-autobiographical look at Hollywood movie making, reflecting on the troubles he encountered on his first American film, Hammett. The film was the winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in 1982.
