Three performers, a Frenchman, an Italian and a German (Patrick Bauchau, Silvio Orlando and Rolf Zacher), travel across Italy presenting their "Circus Fly" to the villages through which they pass. Unfortunately for them, the villagers in Monte Feroce don't appreciate their presentation of man as the most ferocious of beasts; the angry people demand to see real circus animals and run the three out of town. The men walk all night, finally trying to steal three camels meant for another town's nativity pageant. They end up being recruited to portray the Wise Men for the pageant. At night, they each see the same vision of a star and follow it, believing they have been called by God to become modern-day Magi in search of the new Messiah. Why them, when there are so many more clever and important people in the world? Because, as their dream God tells them, this mission doesn't require particularly intelligent people; thus they are perfectly suited for the task.

I Magi randagi is a quirky, comedic film with a heart. It manages to examine religion, racism, greed, envy and lust, while also satirizing life (and even soap operas) and sending a hopeful message. It's a "Christmas" movie that doesn't have to be viewed at Christmas, and one that is ultimately entertaining.
